Our favorite free jazz and experimental festival will resume this 2019, and it all starts this spring. Sonic Transmissions is back with the first show of the season at The Sahara Lounge on Thursday, April 11th. The show will feature Gerry Hemingway / Samuel Blaser Duo and Harris Eisenstadt Old Growth Forest with Tony Malaby, Jeb Bishop, and Jason Roebke. Whether you are familiar with these events, curated by jazz bassist extraordinaire, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, you won’t be disappointed in the artistry and innovation they bring to our honky-tonk town.
From the program notes -
Hemingway is a composer, percussionist, visual artist, and educator, and has been at the forefront of creative music over the course of four decades. During this rare Texas performance Hemingway will perform in a duo together with trombone virtuoso Samuel Blaser (Mark Ducret, Thomas Morgan, Pierre Favre). The Sonic Transmissions show in Austin will be kicking off a North American tour they are embarking on to celebrate their new duo record, Oostum, that was released on NoBusiness Records in 2018.
Old Growth Forest was formed during Eisenstadt’s residency at The Stone in New York in 2015. This powerhouse of Harries Eisenstadt, Tony Malaby, Jeb Bishop and Jason Roebke released their first recording for Clean Feed just after this. Old Growth Forest II will be released by our friends at Astral Spirits in connection to this tour and catches the band live in concert in Northampton, playing to a packed, enthusiastic room. They’ll be playing all new music on their first visit to Austin for the Sonic Transmissions Festival.
